Amazon FBA Ungating: How to Get Approved for Restricted Categories
Many of the best penny items for Amazon FBA are in gated categories. Learn the ungating process for Health, Beauty, Grocery, and Toys to unlock higher-margin selling opportunities.

What Are Gated Categories on Amazon?
Amazon restricts certain product categories and brands to protect buyers from counterfeit or unsafe products. To sell in these categories, you must apply for approval — a process commonly called ungating.
Common gated categories relevant to penny shoppers include Grocery and Gourmet Food, Health and Personal Care for some brands, Beauty for some brands, Toys and Games with seasonal gating during Q4, and some Automotive subcategories.
Some restrictions are category-level, requiring approval to sell anything in that category. Others are brand-level, restricting only specific brands within an otherwise open category. You can check whether a specific ASIN requires approval in your Seller Central account before purchasing inventory.
The Ungating Process Step by Step
The general ungating process works like this:
1. Log into Amazon Seller Central and go to Catalog, then Add a Product. 2. Search for an ASIN in the restricted category. 3. If you see 'Apply to sell,' click it to begin the application. 4. Amazon will typically request invoices from an authorized distributor or manufacturer showing you purchased the product legitimately. 5. Submit invoices and any other requested documentation. 6. Amazon reviews your application within 2-5 business days.
For penny shoppers, the invoice requirement is the most common sticking point. Store receipts from Dollar General or Dollar Tree generally do not satisfy Amazon's requirements. You may need to purchase a small quantity from a legitimate wholesale supplier specifically to obtain a qualifying invoice.
Which Categories to Prioritize
Not all gated categories are worth the ungating effort for penny shoppers. Prioritize based on how frequently relevant penny items appear and how large the margin opportunity is.
Highest priority: Health and Personal Care. Penny lists regularly include health and OTC items, and Amazon FBA demand for these products is consistently strong.
High priority: Beauty. Brand-name beauty products appear on penny lists regularly and command strong Amazon prices relative to their size and weight.
Seasonal priority: Toys and Games. Amazon gates toys for Q4 starting in October. Apply for ungating in September before the gate activates. Toy penny items before the holiday season can be among the most profitable of the year.
Lower priority: Grocery. Expiration date management, storage requirements, and stricter Amazon policies make grocery penny items more complicated than they are worth for most resellers.
